The Caminho dos Diamantes links Diamantina to Ouro Preto through the interior of Minas Gerais. Its history is connected to diamond mining, and the journey combines colonial settlements with landscapes of the Serra do Espinhaaco. The Instituto Estrada Real reports 395 km for the official route.
The departure from Diamantina goes through São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras and Milho Verde, in the municipality of Serro. Alvorada de Minas and Conceição do Mato Dentro come before the mountain stretches leading to Morro do Pilar and Itambé do Mato Dentro. Churches, colonial houses and small settlements help break up the stages.
In the municipality of Itabira, the route passes through Senhora do Carmo and Ipoema, without a mandatory passage through the municipal seat. After Bom Jesus do Amparo and Cocais, continue to Santa Bárbara and Catas Altas. The Sabarabuçu fork is an alternative route with a different destination.
The historic connection from Santa Rita Durão to Mariana remains closed according to the Institute's guidance. There is an alternative via Camargos for cyclists, walkers and horseback riders, and via the MG-129 for cars. Check the current detour before travelling; arrival in Ouro Preto takes place after Mariana.
