The guide
Bratislava on the Danube, one hour from Vienna; the High Tatras, with glacial lakes and trails; Levoča, Spiš Castle and Bardejov, UNESCO World Heritage sites; Banská Štiavnica, a historic silver-mining town; the gorges of Slovak Paradise and Košice in the east. Each destination shows what to do, the best time to go and how to get there.
The guide has three ways in, so you can start wherever you like: routes, which link towns along one journey; destinations, which are the tourist regions; and the regions, with the main cities in each one.
The texts are written from official tourism sources, such as national and regional tourism offices, national parks and city halls, and new cities and routes keep being added to the guide.

Where to start
Six cities from the guide, changing every day.

The largest thermal spa in Slovakia, on the banks of the Váh. The waters emerge from the ground at almost 70 °C and, together with sulfurous mud, are used in treatments for rheumatism. The baths are on the Spa Island, linked to the centre by the Colonnade Bridge, where the sculpture that became the symbol of the town stands. The Balneological Museum tells the history of the spa.

Town of about 30,000 inhabitants in the Váh valley, at the centre of the Liptov region. The Námestie osloboditeľov square groups the Gothic Church of Saint Nicholas, the town hall and the pedestrian zone. It was here that Juraj Jánošík, the Slovak folk hero, was tried and executed in 1713. The town is the base for the Demänová caves and Chopok to the south, for the Tatralandia water park and for the Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina.

Thermal town of about 5,000 inhabitants in the upper Nitra valley, next to Prievidza. The castle, rebuilt at the end of the 19th century in a romantic style, dominates the town from a travertine hill. At its foot are the park, with Slovakia’s oldest zoo, and the center, with the thermal spa and the small square.

Capital of the Trnava region, on the western plains of the country. The town center within the medieval walls includes the City Tower from 1574, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, an early Baroque work in the region, and the Basilica of St. Nicholas, of Gothic origin. The Museum of Western Slovakia occupies a 13th-century convent beside the walls.

Main town on the Small Carpathians wine route, at the foot of the range, about 20 km from Bratislava. The Small Carpathians Museum tells the story of wine in the region in an old merchant’s house. The Pálffy castle park occupies the north of the town centre, and in the hills above the village of Častá stands Červený Kameň, a castle with large cellars.

Capital of the Žilina Region and one of Slovakia’s largest cities, located in the Váh valley. The historic center includes Mariánske námestie (Marian Square), a square with arcades, and Andreja Hlinku Square, beneath the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the Burian Tower. The New Synagogue, designed by Peter Behrens, became an arts center. Nearby are Budatín and Strečno castles, and Malá Fatra National Park begins about 20 km away.
