Liptov is the historic region of the upper Váh valley in central northern Slovakia. To the south lie the Low Tatras (Nízke Tatry), a long chain of rounded peaks that exceed 2,000 meters at Ďumbier and Chopok; to the north, the Western Tatras and Malá Fatra close the horizon. At the valley floor, the Liptovská Mara reservoir occupies the site of villages flooded in the 1970s.
Liptovský Mikuláš is the arrival town, with a station on the country’s main rail line. From there the road follows the Demänová valley, where two show caves are open to visitors, the Cave of Liberty and the Ice Cave, and at the end of the valley is Jasná, the country’s main ski resort, with cable cars up to the Chopok summit. In summer, the same cable cars take you to hiking trails along the Low Tatras ridge.
To the west, Ružomberok is the gateway to Vlkolínec, a wooden-house village inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993, and to Malinô Brdo, a mountain with a cable car above the town. To the east, in Pribylina, the Liptov Village Museum gathers houses and a Gothic church rescued from villages submerged by the reservoir.
The region also has thermal waters: the Tatralandia water park sits on the shore of Liptovská Mara, near Liptovský Mikuláš. For onward travel, the High Tatras and Poprad are less than an hour away by car or train.
This destination brings together 3 cities: Liptovský Mikuláš, Demänovská Dolina, Ružomberok.
