The guide
Cidade Turismo is a travel guide built city by city, now also in Paraguay. For each place you'll find things to do, attractions with their own page, when to go and how to get there.
The guide has three ways in, so you can start wherever you like: routes, which link towns along one journey; destinations, which are the tourist regions; and the departments, with the main cities in each one.
The texts are written from official tourism sources, such as national and regional tourism offices, national parks and city halls, and new cities and routes keep being added to the guide.

Where to start
Six cities from the guide, changing every day.

Areguá, capital of the Central department, lies on the west bank of Lago Ypacaraí, about 28 km from Assunção. Founded in 1538, it was a summer retreat for capital families and preserves manor houses with wide verandas along the Avenida del Lago. It is known for its ceramics, sold at stalls along the streets, for the church atop the hill and for the sandstone formations of Cerro Koi.

Assunção, capital of Paraguay, was founded in 1537 on a bend of the Paraguay River and preserves on top of the bluff the historic center, with the Palacio de López, the Cathedral, the Cabildo, the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes and the Casa de la Independencia. The Costanera avenue runs along the bay, the Loma San Jerónimo climbs the hill next to the center, and the Museo del Barro and Mercado 4 showcase the country's popular art and commerce.

Encarnación, capital of Itapúa, lies on the bank of the Paraná River, opposite Posadas in Argentina. Founded in 1615 by the Jesuit Roque González de Santa Cruz, the Yacyretá dam gave it a long Costanera with sandy beaches that fill from December to February. It is the base for the Jesuit ruins of Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangüé, a World Heritage Site, and hosts the Carnaval Encarnaceno between January and February.

Ciudad del Este, capital of Alto Paraná, is on the bank of the Paraná River, facing Foz do Iguaçu and connected by the Ponte da Amizade. Founded in 1957, it is the second largest city in Paraguay and is known for the commerce of the microcenter. It is the base for the Paraguayan side of Itaipu in Hernandarias, for the Saltos del Monday in Presidente Franco, and for the Reserva Natural Tati Yupi, as well as the Lago de la República and the Catedral San Blas in the center.

San Bernardino sits on the eastern shore of Lago Ypacaraí, about 50 km from Asunción. It was founded in 1881 by German and Swiss immigrants, and the summer houses, clubs and lakeside make it the holiday spot for families from the capital. From December to February the town fills up, with activity on the Costanera by day and bars at night; the rest of the year it is a quiet village with tree-lined streets.
