The guide
Cidade Turismo is a travel guide built city by city, now also in the Dominican Republic. For each place you'll find things to do, attractions with their own page, when to go and how to get there.
The guide has three ways in, so you can start wherever you like: routes, which link towns along one journey; destinations, which are the tourist regions; and the provinces, with the main cities in each one.
The texts are written from official tourism sources, such as national and regional tourism offices, national parks and city halls, and new cities and routes keep being added to the guide.

Where to start
Six cities from the guide, changing every day.

Paraíso is a fishing village on the southern coast of Barahona, between the mountain and the sea, with pebble and sandy beaches and cold-water rivers. Very close is Playa Los Patos, where the country’s shortest river, according to local tradition, forms a freshwater lagoon beside the beach.

Boca Chica is the closest beach to Santo Domingo and Aeropuerto de Las Américas: a cove with shallow, calm water protected by a coral reef, with light sand, food stalls and weekend activity from Dominican families. It works well as the first or last night of the trip, near the airport, or as a beach day trip from the capital.

Las Galeras is a quiet village at the eastern tip of the Samaná Peninsula, at the end of the road, with a calm beach in the center and access, by boat or trails, to isolated and wild beaches: Playa Rincón, long and lined with coconut palms, and Playa Frontón, with clear waters at the foot of a rock wall.

San Fernando de Monte Cristi is a small, quiet town in the country’s northwest, with wooden Victorian houses and a French clock in the central park. A few kilometers away is El Morro, a stone table above the sea in Monte Cristi National Park, and offshore the Cayos Siete Hermanos. In town, the house of Máximo Gómez preserves the history of the Cuban independence manifesto.

Puerto Plata is the main city on the north coast, with a center of wooden Victorian houses around Parque Central, the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe by the seafront, and the Amber Museum. A cable car rises to Loma Isabel de Torres, with a Christ statue and a garden at the top. To the east lies Playa Dorada; inland are the Damajagua waterfalls.

Santa Cruz de Barahona is the main city of the southwest, a port with a malecón facing the Neiba bay and the Sierra de Bahoruco behind. It is the base for the south coast road, with Playa San Rafael, where a mountain river forms freshwater pools beside the sea, and for Lake Enriquillo inland.
