The guide
On the North Island: the Bay of Islands, Auckland, Rotorua and Tongariro National Park; on the South Island: the Fiordland fjords, Queenstown, the West Coast glaciers and Aoraki/Mount Cook. Each destination shows what to do, the best time to go and how to get there.
The guide has three ways in, so you can start wherever you like: routes, which link towns along one journey; destinations, which are the tourist regions; and the regions, with the main cities in each one.
The texts are written from official tourism sources, such as national and regional tourism offices, national parks and city halls, and new cities and routes keep being added to the guide.

Where to start
Six cities from the guide, changing every day.

Punakaiki is a village of under one hundred residents on Highway 6, between Greymouth and Westport, on the edge of Paparoa National Park. It is known for the Pancake Rocks, layered limestone formations with holes where the sea sprays through, and has short forest walks such as the Truman Track and the Pororari River track.

Glenorchy is a village of about 360 people at the end of Lake Wakatipu, 45 km from Queenstown, where the Dart River reaches the lake. The road there runs along the shore between mountains. It is the gateway to the Routeburn Track, one of the Great Walks, and has a boardwalk trail around the lagoon beside the village.

Kaikōura is the town from which trips depart to see sperm whales, dolphins and albatrosses in the waters of the Kaikōura Canyon. The small town center runs along the Esplanade, facing the sea and the snow-capped range. On the peninsula are the cliff track, seal colonies and Fyffe House from the whaling era.

Hokitika is a town of about 3,400 people, founded during the 1864 gold rush, between the Tasman Sea and the Alps. It is known for pounamu craftsmen, the greenstone, and for the beach strewn with logs brought in by the sea. About 33 km away is the Hokitika Gorge, with milky-blue water and suspension bridges.

Arrowtown is a village of about 2,900 people that began in 1862 when gold was found in the Arrow River, about 20 km from Queenstown. Buckingham Street preserves miners’ cottages from the 1870s, the Lakes District Museum tells the gold‑rush story, and the restored Chinese settlement commemorates Chinese miners. In autumn the village trees turn golden.

Blenheim is Marlborough’s seat and the region’s largest town, with about 30,000 residents, at the meeting of the Taylor and Ōpaoa rivers. It is surrounded by the vineyards of the Wairau Valley, the country’s main wine region, and hosts a large collection of wartime aircraft at the Omaka aerodrome. The climate is dry and sunny for much of the year.
