The guide
Cairo, the capital, with Islamic Cairo and the Coptic quarter; the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum; the temples and tombs of Luxor, ancient Thebes; Aswan, the Temple of Philae and Abu Simbel on the shore of Lake Nasser; Alexandria on the Mediterranean; the beaches and reef systems of the Red Sea at Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab; and the oases of the Western Desert, from Siwa to the White Desert. Each destination shows what to do, the best time to go and how to get there.
The guide has three ways in, so you can start wherever you like: routes, which link towns along one journey; destinations, which are the tourist regions; and the provinces, with the main cities in each one.
The texts are written from official tourism sources, such as national and regional tourism offices, national parks and city halls, and new cities and routes keep being added to the guide.

Where to start
Six cities from the guide, changing every day.

Largest settlement of the Bahariya Oasis, with low houses, palm groves, hot springs and an antiquities museum. It belongs to the Giza governorate and concentrates the operators who take visitors by 4x4 into the desert.

Capital of Aswan governorate, on the east bank of the Nile, facing Elephantine Island. The Corniche has hotels, the felucca and cruise docks, and a parallel street holds the market. Around town are the Temple of Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk, the High Dam, the Nubian Museum and the Nubian villages on the west bank.

Capital of the Red Sea governorate, long and narrow along the beach. The old town, El Dahar, is in the north; to the south, Sakkala and the resort avenue follow the shoreline. Boats depart from the marina to the Giftun Islands and to the reefs.

Bedouin and pilgrim village high in the granite mountains of the southern Sinai, next to Saint Catherine’s Monastery and Mount Sinai, which together form a UNESCO World Heritage site. Bedouin guides depart from here for the night climb of Mount Sinai and for longer hikes, such as Mount Catherine.

Small town on the shore of Lake Nasser, about 280 km south of Aswan and near the border with Sudan. Next to it stand the two rock-cut temples ordered by Ramses II—the Great Temple and the temple of Nefertari—moved to higher ground during the UNESCO campaign. It is the site of the Sun Festival in February and October.

Capital of Alexandria Governorate and Egypt’s main port, on a narrow strip between the Mediterranean and Lake Mariout. The Corniche skirts the eastern harbour and runs east for kilometres among 19th‑century buildings, cafés and patisseries, and the centre preserves the ruins of the Greco‑Roman city.
