A small fishing and service town on the Red Sea, with a mosque, market and port, surrounded by resorts that line the coast to the north and south. The road to Edfu in the Nile valley starts here, and excursions to the region’s bays and parks depart from town.
Capital of Alexandria Governorate and Egypt’s main port, on a narrow strip between the Mediterranean and Lake Mariout. The Corniche skirts the eastern harbour and runs east for kilometres among 19th‑century buildings, cafés and patisseries, and the centre preserves the ruins of the Greco‑Roman city.
Capital of the Red Sea governorate, long and narrow along the beach. The old town, El Dahar, is in the north; to the south, Sakkala and the resort avenue follow the shoreline. Boats depart from the marina to the Giftun Islands and to the reefs.
Provincial capital, also called Medinet el-Faium, in the centre of the oasis. The Bahr Yusuf canal crosses the city, with wooden waterwheels—the province’s symbol—and Mamluk and Ottoman-era mosques along the waterfront. It is the starting point for Lake Qarun, the village of Tunis, Wadi el-Rayan, Wadi Al-Hitan, Hawara and Karanis.
Capital of Luxor Governorate on the east bank of the Nile, with Luxor Temple in the center and the Karnak complex to the north, linked by the Avenue of Sphinxes. The Corniche, the riverside avenue, has hotels, boat quays and the Luxor Museum. On the opposite west bank sit the Valley of the Kings and the funerary temples.
Town about 25 km north of Hurghada, built around lagoons, canals and artificial islands, with a marina, beaches, a pedestrian center in Nubian style and kitesurf schools. It is quieter than Hurghada.
City on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Cairo, capital of Giza governorate. On the edge of the desert, southwest of the center, the plateau rises with the three great pyramids and the Sphinx, with the Grand Egyptian Museum beside them. To the south, Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis complete the necropolis inscribed by UNESCO.
A resort city at the southern tip of the Sinai, spread across bays such as Naama, Sharks and Nabq, with the Old Market and the Al Sahaba Mosque in the south and a marina where boats depart for Ras Mohammed and the Strait of Tiran. Coral reefs begin near the shore at many beaches.
The oasis town of Farafra (Qasr al-Farafra), in the Western Desert, in the New Valley governorate, surrounded by palm groves, fields and hot springs such as Bir Sitta. It is about 45 km south of the White Desert National Park and is the southern base for desert trips, to the Crystal Mountain and the Agabat valley.
A port city on Egypt’s western coast, halfway between Alexandria and the border. In Antiquity it was called Paraetonium and was a transit port for Egyptian grain bound for Rome. It has a bay with calm water and white‑sand beaches, like Agiba to the west, popular with Egyptian holidaymakers in summer, and is the starting point of the road to Siwa.
Town on the coast of the Gulf of Aqaba in the southern Sinai that grew from a Bedouin fishing village. It has a seafront promenade with cafés and dive schools, coral reefs a few meters from the sand, the Blue Hole to the north and a shallow lagoon in the south used for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is a departure point for Ras Abu Galum and for Saint Catherine.
