The guide
Ljubljana, the capital, on the banks of the Ljubljanica; the lakes of Bled and Bohinj, at the foot of the Julian Alps and Mount Triglav; the Soča River, with its emerald-green water; Postojna Cave and the Škocjan Caves in the Karst; and Piran on the Adriatic. Maribor, Ptuj and the thermal spas complete the east. Each destination shows what to do, the best time to go and how to get there.
The guide has three ways in, so you can start wherever you like: routes, which link towns along one journey; destinations, which are the tourist regions; and the regions, with the main cities in each one.
The texts are written from official tourism sources, such as national and regional tourism offices, national parks and city halls, and new cities and routes keep being added to the guide.

Where to start
Six cities from the guide, changing every day.

A stone village perched on a Karst hill in the municipality of Komen, one of the oldest settlements in the region. Surrounded by 15th-century walls, it has narrow streets, the Church of St. Daniel with a lemon-shaped tower, and a castle with an art gallery. Below the walls lies the Ferrari Garden, designed by Max Fabiani, who served as Štanjel’s mayor between the wars.

A resort town on the east shore of the lake, at the foot of the Julian Alps. From the center you can walk to the lakeside path, the pletna docks and the castle on the cliff, and the Vintgar Gorge is a short distance to the north. There are bakeries famous for kremšnita and a park by the water.

Medieval town in the northern part of central Slovenia, between Ljubljana and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. The old centre, with Šutna Street and Glavni trg square, surrounds the Mali grad hill and its Romanesque chapel. Zaprice Castle houses the city museum. From the valley to the north a cable car rises to the Velika Planina plateau with the shepherd huts.

Seaside locality with a spa tradition in the bay next to Piran, in the same municipality. It has the main urban beach on the coast, a long promenade, the Lucija marina and, on the Seča peninsula, the Forma Viva sculpture park. The Sečovlje salt pans lie just to the south.

Largest city and seat of the Slovenian government, cut by the Ljubljanica. The old town, closed to cars, brings together the hilltop castle, the Triple Bridge, the Dragon Bridge, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Central Market, almost all designed or redesigned by Jože Plečnik. To the west is Tivoli Park; to the south, in the Trnovo neighborhood, Plečnik’s house; and on the plain of the Ljubljansko barje, the prehistoric stilt houses of Ig.

Small town on the banks of the Savinja River, at the foot of Mount Hum, known for its thermal waters and for the brewery founded in 1825, the largest in the country. The Church of Saint Martin, of Romanesque origin, dominates the center. Every July the town hosts Pivo in cvetje, a beer-and-flowers festival. Trails climb Mount Hum, with views over the valley.
