What the guide covers

The Slovenia guide is being prepared by destinations across the country. In the central area, the list runs from Ljubljana to Kamnik and Velika Planina. In the Alps, it includes Bled, Bohinj and Triglav, Kranjska Gora, the Soča Valley, Idrija and Goriška Brda; in the southwest, Postojna, Lipica, the Škocjan Caves and the Piran coast; in the east, Maribor, Ptuj, Celje, the Logar Valley, the Krka Valley and Prekmurje.

Each destination gathers the towns of the region, what to do in each one, the attractions with their own pages, when to go and how to get there. Destinations appear on the country page as they are published: while a destination is being prepared, it does not appear on the list.

Regions and groups

Slovenia has no states or provinces: the country is divided into 212 municipalities. To organize the towns, the guide uses the 12 statistical regions that cover the whole territory: Gorenjska, Goriška, Obalno-kraška, Primorsko-notranjska, Osrednjeslovenska, Zasavska, Posavska, Jugovzhodna Slovenija, Savinjska, Koroška, Podravska and Pomurska. They appear in four groups, the same used by the country’s tourism agency: Ljubljana and Central Slovenia, Alpine Slovenia, Mediterranean and Karst Slovenia, and Thermal and Pannonian Slovenia.

Place names appear as they are used in the country, in Slovene and with their diacritics, such as Škofja Loka and Goriška Brda. When a conventional form exists in Portuguese, it is used, as in Liubliana, Julian Alps and Karst. On the coast and in Prekmurje, many signs also show the name in Italian or Hungarian.

How to travel around Slovenia

Slovenia is small: from Ljubljana it takes about an hour to reach Bled or Postojna, and about an hour and a half to reach Piran or Maribor. Trains connect the capital with Maribor, Celje, Koper, Novo mesto and Jesenice, and the Bohinj line crosses the Alps to Nova Gorica. Buses reach almost all towns, and a car is useful in the valleys and villages. Drive on the right, and motorways and expressways require an electronic vignette.

The time zone is UTC+1, and UTC+2 from March to October, the same as Italy and Austria. The climate changes within a few kilometers: Mediterranean on the coast, alpine in the northwest mountains and continental on the inland plains and hills, with warm summers and cold winters, with snow in the mountains.

Heritage and nature

Slovenia has five UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Škocjan Caves, the prehistoric pile dwellings of the Ljubljansko barje, the Idrija mercury mine, the ancient beech forests of Krokar and Snežnik-Ždrocle and the works of Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana. The country’s only national park, Triglav National Park, covers the area around the highest mountain, at 2,864 meters, in the Julian Alps.

Why there are no prices

In Slovenia, the guide does not show prices for tours or tickets because they change frequently. When there is a visit with a fixed time or reservation, such as in caves, cable cars and rafting trips, the text warns of this, and the price should be checked before you go.

How the content is made

The information for each place is researched from official sources, such as the Slovenian tourism agency and municipal authorities, Triglav National Park, cave administrations and UNESCO, and verified before publication.

The pictures in this guide are illustrations based on the real place, not photographs, and may differ from it. Photos sent by travelers appear separately, as travelers' photos.

If you find any information that differs, write to us: fixing it is quicker than it seems.
