Alexandria lies on the Mediterranean coast, west of the Delta, about 220 km from Cairo. It was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and was the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt, Cleopatra’s dynasty, home to the Lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the Library.

The city stretches along the Corniche, the seaside avenue, between the fortress built on the site of the old Lighthouse and the royal gardens to the east. Temples, tombs and theatres from the Greco‑Roman period appear amid the neighbourhoods.

To the west, about 105 km along the coast, El Alamein preserves cemeteries and war memorials in the desert, and the North Coast has clear‑water beaches that are crowded in summer.

Alexandria also has a tradition of cafés, patisseries and fish restaurants, and it is Egypt’s second city.
