The route
What the Costa do Descobrimento is
The Costa do Descobrimento can be traveled as a coastal journey between Belmonte, Santa Cruz Cabrália and Porto Seguro. The Rio Jequitinhonha shapes Belmonte's landscape, while the Cidade Alta and Coroa Vermelha mark different chapters of Cabrália's history. In Porto Seguro, the historic ensemble of the municipal seat adds to the beaches and the centers of Arraial d’Ajuda, Trancoso and Caraíva.
The route combines road sections and access points that require crossings. The BA-001 runs along the coast between Belmonte and the north bank of the Rio João de Tiba; the ferry crossing leads to Cabrália. The BR-367 follows the coast to Porto Seguro. South of the municipal seat, the Buranhém crossing and local roads organize arrival to Arraial and Trancoso. Caraíva is approached via an unpaved road and a final canoe crossing.
The itinerary highlights both the protected heritage and the communities living along the coast. Experiences in indigenous territories should be arranged with the hosts. Localities that belong to Porto Seguro remain part of the same municipal stop.

-
1 · BABelmonte
Belmonte sits at the mouth of the Rio Jequitinhonha and preserves housing typical of the cocoa cycle. The lighthouse in the town center and the beaches along the coast show different facets of the municipality. The route south uses the BA-001, crossing the landscape between the estuary and the rural localities.
→ Santa Cruz Cabrália The BA-001 links Belmonte to the north bank of the Rio João de Tiba, passing coastal localities. Arrival at the center of Santa Cruz Cabrália from the coast includes the ferry that crosses the river; organize the crossing with your chosen transport.
-
2 · BASanta Cruz Cabrália
Santa Cruz Cabrália brings together the Cidade Alta, with the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the former Casa de Câmara e Cadeia, and Coroa Vermelha, linked to the memory of the first mass and to the Pataxó presence. The Rio João de Tiba separates the center from the beaches of Santo André. The heritage sites and the waterfront require specific movement within the municipality.
→ Porto Seguro The BR-367 follows the Cabrália shoreline to Porto Seguro, passing Coroa Vermelha and the accesses to the urban beaches. This connection between the two municipal seats is by paved road, without the Rio João de Tiba ferry.
-
3 · BAPorto Seguro
Porto Seguro is one of the tourist centers of southern Bahia, with the Cidade Histórica, urban beaches and a Pataxó cultural presence. Arraial d’Ajuda, the Quadrado de Trancoso and the village of Caraíva belong to the same municipality. The Buranhém and the Rio Caraíva add different crossings to road access, so these localities deserve separate stages from a visit to the municipal seat.
How many days
Allow five to eight days if you want to divide the trip between the Belmonte coast, Cabrália and the Porto Seguro centers. Caraíva requires special attention regarding access and luggage.
Best time to go
Rain occurs throughout the year, generally heavier in March and April and in November and December. August and September are usually drier and milder for walking through the towns. On the reefs, choose departures at low tide; in the estuaries, boarding also depends on river conditions. From December to February, the high season tends to increase activity at the beaches and on crossings.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
How to travel it
Going north–south, use the BA-001 from Belmonte to the Rio João de Tiba crossing to Cabrália and the BR-367 to Porto Seguro. Within Porto Seguro, arrange Arraial d’Ajuda, Trancoso and Caraíva as local stages. The car stays on the Nova Caraíva side before the canoe crossing; confirm crossings before you go.
Who it's for
For travelers who want to alternate beaches, historic centers, river landscapes and experiences led by local communities, accepting a combination of car, ferry and canoe.
Your questions
Frequently asked questions about the Costa do Descobrimento
Are Arraial d’Ajuda, Trancoso and Caraíva different towns?
The three localities belong to Porto Seguro. You can split nights among them, but the itinerary counts as a single municipal stop in Porto Seguro.
Where along the coastal route are ferries used?
Between Belmonte and the center of Cabrália, the BA-001 reaches the Rio João de Tiba crossing. In Porto Seguro, crossing the Buranhém is an option to reach Arraial d’Ajuda. Confirm each crossing before you travel.
Does the car reach the village of Caraíva?
The road approach ends on the bank of Nova Caraíva. The transfer to the village is by canoe, and local circulation is along sandy paths; plan your luggage for this stage.
Can I explore the coast while staying in a single base of accommodation?
A single base makes nearby outings easier, but increases returns for more distant stages. Distributing nights among the chosen centers reduces travel and allows you to dedicate full periods to local access.
How to arrange an experience with a Pataxó community?
Choose a visit hosted and led by the community itself, arrange entry in advance and follow their guidelines on movement, photography and available activities.
