Nuuk, the capital, at the mouth of its fjord; Ilulissat and the Icefjord, dotted with icebergs; Kangerlussuaq, on the edge of the ice cap; Sisimiut and Disko Bay; the Norse ruins of Kujataa in the south; and Tasiilaq and Scoresby Sund on the east coast. Each destination shows what to do, the best time to go and how to get there.
The guide has three ways in, so you can start wherever you like: routes, which link towns along one journey; destinations, which are the tourist regions; and the municipalities, with the main cities in each one.
The texts are written from official tourism sources, such as national and regional tourism offices, national parks and city halls, and new cities and routes keep being added to the guide.

Where to start
Six cities from the guide, changing every day.

Seat of Qeqertalik and the fifth-largest town in Greenland, with about three thousand residents, on an island in a low-lying archipelago at the southern entrance of Disko Bay. Founded in 1759 as Egedesminde, it has colonial houses by the harbor, a museum and a sea of islands for boat and kayak trips, with whales at various times of year.

The third-largest town in Greenland, on Disko Bay beside the Icefjord. The name means “icebergs” in Greenlandic. It has colorful houses scattered across the rocks, thousands of sled dogs, a museum in the house where Knud Rasmussen was born, and trails that lead to viewpoints over the ice, plus boat trips out to the Eqi glacier.

A town of about 1,400 residents on a small island in the Uummannaq fjord, at the foot of a two-summit, heart-shaped mountain. It has colorful houses on the rocks, the stone church, the museum and historic turf houses. In winter, when the surrounding water turns to solid ice, hunters use dog sleds to leave the island.

A settlement of about 200 residents on an island off the east coast, with colourful houses on the rocks, a 1908 church built from shipwreck timber and the tradition of drum dancing. It has the region’s airport, two hours’ flight from Reykjavík, and is the gateway to Tasiilaq and the fjords full of icebergs in the east.

A small town of about a thousand inhabitants on an island at the extreme south, whose name means “place of polar bears” in Greenlandic. The old harbour houses became a museum, and trails lead from the streets up the island’s hills. This is the departure point for boats to the Tasermiut mountains and the hot bath at Uunartoq.

A settlement of sheep herders on the shore of the Tunulliarfik fjord, on the site of Brattahlíð, the farm of Erik the Red. It has Norse ruins, a reconstructed longhouse and church, a statue of Leif Eriksson, and trails through the farms. On the other side of the fjord is Narsarsuaq, where the hike to the Kiattuut glacier starts.
