at your own pace.

Aasiaat lies at the southwest entrance of Disko Bay, on an island in an archipelago of thousands of low, rocky islands, unlike the fjord-and-mountain coasts of the rest of the country. With about three thousand residents, it is the administrative capital of Qeqertalik.

The colony was founded in 1759 by Niels Egede, son of Hans Egede, under the name Egedesminde, and moved to its current site a few years later. Colonial houses line the harbor, and one of them, the former administrator’s residence, houses the town museum.

The archipelago is the main attraction: channels, coves and islets explored by boat or kayak, with icebergs coming from the Ilulissat Icefjord. Whales appear at various times, from humpbacks in summer to Greenland whales at the end of winter.

In winter, the town has cross-country ski trails and dog-sled rides.
