at your own pace.

Uummannaq lies north of Disko Bay, on a small island in the middle of the Uummannaq fjord, about 600 km north of the Arctic Circle. It is the largest town north of Ilulissat, with colorful houses scattered over the rocks and a busy fishing boat harbour.

Behind the town, a 1,170-meter mountain with two summits forms a heart and gives the place its name. The reddish cliffs appear from every viewpoint, from the harbour to the football field, one of the most photographed in the country.

Beside the harbour are the 1935 stone church, the museum in an old hospital and historic turf houses. Nearby, in 1972, the Qilakitsoq mummies were found; they are now in Nuuk.

In summer the fjord fills with icebergs; in winter and spring, the sea surface hardens and becomes a route for dog sleds.
