Marionberry pie — Oregon, the United States

The marionberry is a type of blackberry developed in Oregon. It was created by the breeding program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture together with Oregon State University in Corvallis, and released in 1956. The name comes from Marion County, where Salem, the state capital, is located and where most of the cultivation is concentrated. The fruit is large, dark and glossy, with a more complex flavor than the common blackberry.

Marionberry pie is the best-known way to eat them: a buttery pastry pie, with a whole top crust or a lattice, filled with the berries, sugar and a little starch to set the juice, baked until the deep-purple filling bubbles. In 2017, the Oregon Legislature declared marionberry pie the state’s official pie.

The marionberry harvest is short, generally from July into early August in the Willamette Valley. In summer, farms open for u-pick, and the pie appears at roadside stands, farmers markets and dessert menus across the state. Out of season, frozen fruit keeps the pie on menus year-round.
