Coffee milk — Rhode Island, the United States
Coffee milk is a simple drink: cold milk with coffee syrup, stirred until it turns a caramel color, like chocolate milk where coffee replaces the chocolate. The syrup is made from brewed coffee, concentrated and sweetened.
The drink is associated with Italian immigrants who arrived in Rhode Island in the early 20th century and with the diners and soda-fountain pharmacies of the era. Since then, coffee syrup has been sold in the state’s supermarkets alongside chocolate syrups, and coffee milk has been an everyday drink for children and adults.
In 1993, Rhode Island declared coffee milk its official drink. It is also served as a milkshake flavor, called a cabinet in the state.
