Sonoran hot dog — Tucson, the United States

The Sonoran hot dog came from across the border. It became popular in Hermosillo, in the Mexican state of Sonora, before crossing the border and arriving in Tucson in southern Arizona, where it began to be sold on the streets. In a short time it became the snack most associated with the city.

The sausage is wrapped in bacon and grilled until the bacon is crispy. It goes into a soft, elongated roll similar to the Mexican bolillo, sliced lengthwise to form a pocket, and is topped with cooked beans, diced tomato and onion, mayonnaise, mustard and jalapeño hot sauce. It is often served with a grilled güero pepper on the side.

The snack is sold from carts and street stands, especially in the southern part of the city, and shows how Tucson cuisine blends Mexican and United States traditions. In 2015, Tucson became the first American city recognized by UNESCO as a City of Gastronomy.
