Whoopie pie — Maine, the United States

The whoopie pie looks like a cake sandwich: two round, soft chocolate cakes baked like large cookies with a thick layer of white, creamy filling in the middle made from marshmallow, butter, and sugar.

Its origin is disputed. Maine and Pennsylvania, where the treat is associated with Amish families, both claim to have created it, and the most repeated tradition says the name comes from the shout of joy by someone who found the treat in their lunch pail. In Maine, it has been sold in bakeries, markets, and roadside stands since the early 20th century.

In 2011, Maine declared the whoopie pie its official state treat. There are versions made with pumpkin, vanilla, and berry batters, and festivals dedicated to the treat take place in summer, from June to August.
