Coney dog — Detroit, the United States

The coney dog is Detroit’s version of the hot dog. It was brought to the city by Greek and Macedonian immigrants in the early 20th century, who passed through New York, encountered the hot dogs of Coney Island and, according to the most common account, brought the name with them. In Detroit, the diners that sell the sandwich became known as coney islands.

The traditional recipe includes: beef sausage with a snap, steamed bun, seasoned ground-meat sauce without beans, a touch of yellow mustard and chopped white onion on top. Some people order the loose coney, with the sauce and meat served loose, without the sausage.

In downtown Detroit, two neighboring diners opened by two Greek brothers have kept a rivalry since the early 20th century. Across the metropolitan area there are hundreds of coney islands, which also serve Greek food and breakfast.
