Coca-Cola — Atlanta, the United States

Coca-Cola was born in Atlanta, Georgia. On May 8, 1886, pharmacist John Stith Pemberton prepared a new-flavored syrup in his laboratory and took it to a downtown pharmacy, where the soda fountain mixed it with carbonated water and began selling it by the glass. A Georgia Historical Society marker indicates the corner where the first glass was sold.

The name comes from two ingredients in the original formula: the coca leaf and the kola nut. Pemberton sold the rights to the drink shortly before he died, in 1888, and the company formed in Atlanta took Coca-Cola to the rest of the country and, later, to the world. The company’s headquarters remain in Atlanta.

In the city, the drink is part of the landscape and local history: it lends its name to a museum dedicated to its story near Centennial Olympic Park, and appears on streets, buildings, and in memorabilia collections. In the United States, the soft drink is served cold, with lots of ice, in a glass or in the curved glass bottle design introduced in 1915.

The exact recipe is still kept as a trade secret. What is known is the basics: sugar syrup, caramel, cola flavorings, vanilla and citrus flavorings, and carbonated water.
