Mantecadas are the sweet of Astorga. The specifications notebook of the Protected Geographical Indication records that the 1805 accounts of the city’s diocesan archive already mention them as a Christmas sweet and that, in 1901, an annual register listed eleven mantecada factories in Astorga. The city was, in the same period, also a centre of chocolate production.
The batter contains wheat flour, eggs, cow butter, pork lard and sugar, beaten until light. Each portion is baked in a cajilla, an open square-based box of kraft paper folded by hand. In the oven, the batter rises and forms a rounded dome that overflows the rim.
The PGI Mantecadas de Astorga was registered in the European Union in 2005. The production area covers Astorga and three neighbouring municipalities: Brazuelo, San Justo de la Vega and Valderrey, all in the province of León.
Mantecadas are sold in boxes at the city’s pastry shops and have become a traditional souvenir for people passing through Astorga, including pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
