Things to do in Garibaldi
- Centro Histórico (Rua Buarque de Macedo) Laid out in 1879, Rua Buarque de Macedo has dozens of buildings put up mostly between the 1880s and the 1930s, with French, Portuguese and Italian influences. The cobblestone paving and underground wiring preserve the old look of the ensemble.
- Vinícola Peterlongo Founded by Italian immigrant Manoel Peterlongo, it was the first in Brazil to make sparkling wine by the champenoise method. The basalt stone headquarters has a castle-shaped residence and an underground cellar open to visitors.
- Cooperativa Vinícola Garibaldi Founded in 1931, the cooperative brings together hundreds of grape-growing families and is known for its sparkling wines. Guided tours tell the winery's story and include tastings.
- Igreja Matriz São Pedro Rebuilt after a fire destroyed the previous church in 1920, it opened in 1924 with a Neo-Gothic design from France. The work was led by Friar Bruno de Gillonnay, with support from the local Catholic community.
When to go
Fenachamp, the sparkling wine festival, takes place in October every two years, in odd-numbered years. The grape harvest runs from December to March. Winter is cold and busy throughout the mountains.
How many days to stay
One day is enough for the historic center and two wineries. Many people come from Bento Gonçalves or arrive on the Maria Fumaça, which stops at the town's station.
