About Vinícola Peterlongo
Vinícola Peterlongo is one of the oldest wine houses in Garibaldi, in Serra Gaúcha. It's in the center of town and is known as Brazil's sparkling wine pioneer.
The story begins with Italian immigrant Manoel Peterlongo, in the early 20th century. It was there that one of the country's first sparkling wines was made by the traditional method, the champenoise, with the second fermentation taking place in the bottle. The headquarters was built of basalt stone and includes an old castle-shaped residence.
The guided tour goes through the underground cellar, said to be the first of its kind in Brazil, as well as a historic tunnel, old wooden casks, oak barrels and a small museum. From the top of the house, the castle's balcony looks out over the town. The tour usually ends with a tasting.
It's a good outing if you want to understand how sparkling wine is made and see Italian immigrant architecture. It works well for couples, groups of friends and families. Tastings are for those 18 and over only.

Practical information
How much time to set aside
Set aside about 1 hour for the guided tour, plus some time for the tasting.
Best time
Worth it all year, because the underground cellar is sheltered from the weather; during the vindima, in summer, the town is livelier with the harvest atmosphere.
How to get there
It's on Rua Manoel Peterlongo, in the center of Garibaldi. You can walk there from other points downtown. Garibaldi is about 110 km from Porto Alegre through Serra Gaúcha and very close to Bento Gonçalves.
Tip
Check hours and whether you need to book before you go, especially on weekends and holidays. Bring a jacket: the underground cellar is cooler than the street.
