About Igreja Matriz São Pedro
The Igreja Matriz São Pedro is the main Catholic church in Garibaldi, in Serra Gaúcha. It stands in the Historic Center, on Praça da Matriz, and its tall tower is visible from many points in town.
The current church replaced an earlier one, destroyed by a fire in 1920. The rebuilding was led by Friar Bruno de Gillonnay, with support from the community, and the new church opened in 1924. The design came from France, in Gothic style, inspired by the Basilica of Lourdes.
Outside, the pointed tower and the vertical lines typical of Gothic architecture stand out. Inside, you'll find colorful stained glass and the high altar. The church is still active, with parish Masses and celebrations.
The visit is quick and free, good if you enjoy religious architecture and the history of Italian immigration. It pairs well with a walk along Rua Buarque de Macedo, right next door.
