The region
Get to know Posavska
Posavska covers the lower stretch of the Sava valley in southeastern Slovenia, up to the border with Croatia. The Sava, Krka and Sotla rivers meet in the region, surrounded by hills with vineyards and floodplain forests. The main towns are Krško, Brežice and Sevnica.
Brežice has a Renaissance castle that houses the Posavje Museum, with the Knights’ Hall decorated with 18th-century frescoes. Near the town are the Čatež thermal baths, with thermal water and outdoor pools. Sevnica, further north, has a castle overlooking the town, and in Brestanica the Rajhenburg Castle tells the region’s history, including the deportations of World War II.
Kostanjevica na Krki is a town built on an island in the Krka River. Beside it, the former Cistercian monastery houses the Božidar Jakac Gallery of Slovenian art, and in the surrounding park is Forma Viva, an outdoor collection of wooden sculptures. The Krakovski gozd floodplain forest next door is one of the country’s largest floodplain woods.
In the hills of Bizeljsko, north of Brežice, the repnice are cellars dug into quartz sand, used to store wine and vegetables. The region produces white wines and Bizeljsko sparkling wine, and the wine roads pass through villages and viewpoints over the Sava.
