About Parque Natural Municipal Montanhas de Teresópolis
The Parque Natural Municipal Montanhas de Teresópolis is the largest strictly protected municipal conservation area in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It was created by decree in 2009 and protects areas of Atlantic Forest and headwaters of the Piabanha, Preto and Paquequer river basins.
For visitors, the gateway is the Núcleo Pedra da Tartaruga, in the Granja Florestal neighborhood. There, a rock massif brings together three formations: Pedra da Tartaruga, Pedra do Camelo and Pedra do Arrieiro. The Tartaruga (Turtle) got its name because it looks like a giant turtle lying on top of the hill.
The main trail to the top of the Pedra da Tartaruga is about 650 meters long and takes about 30 minutes of easy walking. Part of the way follows a wooden boardwalk along the rock. At the top there are viewpoints with wide views of the Serra dos Órgãos and the surrounding mountains.
The outing is easy and good for families with children. The area has a campground, restrooms, a picnic area and climbing and rappelling routes, popular with groups and mountaineering schools.
