About Forte Junqueira
Forte Junqueira is a small military fort at the top of the bank of the Paraguay River, in downtown Corumbá. It was built right after the Paraguayan War, in the early 1870s, to strengthen the defense of Brazil's western border. It is named after José de Oliveira Junqueira, the Minister of War at the time.
The fort holds twelve old cannons, pointed at the river, that were never used in combat. The thick walls and artillery pieces are well preserved. The site is listed by Iphan (the national heritage institute) as part of Brazil's historic fortifications.
The fort is inside the grounds of the Army's 17th Border Battalion, which handles its upkeep. Visits are accompanied by soldiers, who tell the history of the place. It is a short, flat visit, easy for most people.
The highlight, besides the history, is the view. From the fort you see the Paraguay River, the opposite bank and the Pantanal plain fading into the horizon.
