About Barra de Gramame

Barra de Gramame is where the Rio Gramame (river) meets the sea, on the border between João Pessoa to the north and Conde to the south. A sandbar separates the river from the ocean and changes shape with the tides and waves, so the scenery is never quite the same.

The main draw is the calm, shallow water on the river side, good for families with children. There you can switch between fresh water and salt water in just a few steps. At low tide, the shallow area gets even bigger.

The setting is rustic: coconut palms, cliffs in the background, mangroves along the riverbanks and simple fishermen's houses. There are a few kiosks and beach shacks serving fish and seafood, plus a small market with clothes and crafts.

Facilities are basic, so bring what you need for the day. The river mouth is a frequent stop on buggy and van tours along the south coast, and the steady wind draws kitesurfers.
