About Mirante do Centro Geodésico
The Mirante do Centro Geodésico (viewpoint) is one of the most visited spots in Chapada dos Guimarães. It sits on the edge of the sandstone cliffs, very close to town, where the plateau ends abruptly and the view opens onto the lowlands below.
The name comes from a marker set at the site and from the idea that this would be the center of South America, a point halfway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In fact, the official marker of the continent's geodesic center, calculated by the Rondon Commission, is in Cuiabá. The one in Chapada is a reference marker for surveying, but the nickname stuck and the viewpoint became known by it.
From the top, the horizon seems endless: the view reaches the plain and, on clear days, the Cuiabá region. The rocks at the cliff edge give the feeling of hanging over the valley, and the spot is very popular for photos.
Entry is free and no guide is needed. From the road to the edge of the viewpoint is a short, easy walk. The cliff edge is high, so keep a very close eye on children.
