About Museu Vivo do Garimpo
Museu Vivo do Garimpo (Living Mining Museum) is inside the Mucugê Municipal Park, in Chapada Diamantina (BA), near Projeto Sempre Viva. It is a small museum devoted to the history of diamond mining, which began in the region in 1844, when diamonds were found on the banks of the Mucugê stream.
The museum is housed in a former miners' shelter, known as a toca, restored and adapted to display objects from the diamond era. It opened in 2007, is run by the city government and has technical supervision from the Bahia Geological Museum. Much of the collection came from donations by local miners and their families.
On the visit you see natural diamonds and carbonados, 19th-century English gem-cutting machines, mining tools, period clothing and old photos. The attendants usually explain what the miners' work and life were like, and the conversation is an important part of the visit.
Access is by a short, easy trail of about 400 meters, with information panels. It is a light outing that combines well with a visit to Projeto Sempre Viva and the park's waterfalls.
