About Serra Piroca
Serra Piroca, also called Serra or Morro da Piraoca, is the hill that stands out on the Alter do Chão skyline, in Santarém. About 110 meters high, it is the highest point around the village, and its summit works as a natural viewpoint over the Tapajós River.
The trail starts near the Ilha do Amor, across the lake from the village. The path climbs through the forest and is easy most of the way, but the final stretch is steep and tiring, especially in the region's humid heat. At the top there is a cross and a few makeshift benches to rest on.
From up there the view is open in every direction: the village of Alter do Chão, the Ilha do Amor, Lago Verde, the Tapajós River and Ponta do Cururu. The landscape changes a lot throughout the year with the river level, with more sand exposed in the dry season and more water at high water.
It is a short hike, suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness, including children used to walking. It is not accessible for people with limited mobility. As the spot is isolated, the city's tourist brochure recommends hiking with a local guide.
Before you go
Practical information
How much time to set aside
A morning or a late afternoon is enough to cross to the Ilha do Amor, climb up, enjoy the view at the top and come back.
Best time
Very early or late in the afternoon, when it is less hot; late afternoon also lets you watch the sunset over the Tapajós. In the dry season more beaches and sandbanks appear in the view; at high water, access may require a boat and the trail gets more slippery.
How to get there
It is in Alter do Chão, Santarém's beach village (PA). From the village waterfront, cross by canoe to the Ilha do Amor, where the trail to the top begins. Local guides and boat trips from the village also take you to the start of the path.
Tip
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent and sneakers with good grip, because the final climb is steep. Agree on the return time with the canoe operator before starting the trail.
