About Praias Oceânicas
The Praias Oceânicas make up Niterói's open-sea stretch in the Região Oceânica, and include five main beaches: Piratininga (with the Praião and the Prainha), the small, well-preserved Praia do Sossego, Camboinhas, Itaipu and Itacoatiara. The setting combines bands of light sand, rocky headlands and restinga vegetation, with the lagoons of Piratininga and Itaipu forming the backdrop.
Each beach has its own profile. Itacoatiara is famous for its waves and the view between the Costão and the Pedra do Elefante; on the right-hand side, the Prainha usually has more sheltered waters. Piratininga is extensive and photogenic, with views of the islands Pai, Mãe and Menina. Sossego is a small cove between Piratininga and Camboinhas, reached by a trail, with a rustic atmosphere. Camboinhas tends to have calmer seas and long sandy stretches, while Itaipu preserves the fishing tradition and a historical-cultural environment around its cove.
An important geographic landmark is the Canal de Itaipu, which links the lagoon to the ocean and defines the natural boundary between Itaipu and Camboinhas. Praia do Sossego is a reference in environmental management and has held the international Bandeira Azul certification for consecutive seasons, reinforcing the quality of the bathing area and conservation actions. Many surrounding green areas are part of the Parque Estadual da Serra da Tiririca, with classic trails such as the Costão de Itacoatiara and the Pedra do Elefante.
To enjoy them, you can alternate sea bathing, walks on the sand and landscape watching. Itacoatiara draws surfers; Itaipu and its lagoons invite activities in calmer waters; Piratininga and Camboinhas offer beautiful sunsets. In common, all provide privileged views of the Fluminense coast and are symbols of the city's connection with the Atlantic.

Practical information
How much time to set aside
To visit 1 or 2 beaches, allow 3 to 6 hours; to do the full circuit at a relaxed pace, set aside a full day.
Best time
Spring and autumn offer milder weather and good visibility; winter usually brings more consistent swell for surfing. Prefer mornings or late afternoons for gentler sun. Avoid holidays and check sea and wind conditions before entering the water, especially at Itacoatiara and Sossego.
How to get there
From Niterói's Centro, follow the Túnel Charitas–Cafubá and continue along Estrada Francisco da Cruz Nunes, with signposted access to Piratininga, Camboinhas, Itaipu and Itacoatiara. It's also possible to arrive by ferry to the Centro and continue by municipal buses to the Região Oceânica. Taxi/app and bicycle are viable alternatives.
Tip
Bring sun protection and water, respect signs and rip currents (stronger at Itacoatiara and Sossego), and wear sneakers for the trails. For groups in vans/buses, parking along the waterfront is regulated by city hall; check in advance. Take your trash back with you.
