About Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói

Opened in 1996 and designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói stands on the Mirante da Boa Viagem as a landmark of Brazilian architecture. Its sculptural form, with a winding ramp and a reflecting pool, has drawn comparisons to a flying saucer and provides photogenic framing of the landscape, with the Pão de Açúcar and the Corcovado in the background.

The collection centers on the Coleção João Sattamini, one of the country's most significant contemporary art collections, complemented by the Coleção MAC Niterói, made up of donations from artists who have exhibited at the museum. The program includes temporary exhibitions, educational activities, and projects that engage with the city, keeping the building vibrant and continually refreshed.

Besides the galleries, the courtyard and the ring of windows offer 360° views of the Baía de Guanabara. A visit will reward both the appreciation of the artworks and of the building itself, conceived as an inhabitable sculpture. In the basement, a bistro complements the cultural experience with views of Niterói's waterfront.

The MAC is part of Niemeyer's set of works in the city, known as the Caminho Niemeyer. It has undergone modernizations in recent years and remains active as a municipal cultural facility, recently celebrating its 30th anniversary with exhibitions and special activities.
