About Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra

The Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra sits on the eastern tip of the entrance to the Baía de Guanabara, in the Jurujuba neighborhood of Niterói. Firing across with the defenses on the other side of the bar, it was a key piece in protecting Rio de Janeiro between the Colony and the Empire. Listed as national heritage since 1939, it remains under the administration of the Army and is open for guided visits.

The complex preserves courtyards, ramparts and the Salão de Pedra (former paiol), as well as the chapel dedicated to Santa Bárbara, dated 1612. Walking the circuit, visitors see galleries and old cells hewn into the rock, gun ports facing the bar and features of bastioned military engineering that marked successive phases of the square's expansion.

Points of interest include the lioz stone sundial, batteries with dozens of historic artillery pieces and viewpoints with wide views of Pão de Açúcar, Urca and the outline of the Guanabara. The fortress also witnessed notable episodes, such as actions during the Revolta da Armada, which reinforces its historical and symbolic value.

Visits are accompanied by garrison guides who explain the function of each sector and share local curiosities, like the area nicknamed "Cova da Onça", surrounded by legends. It is a tour that combines military architecture, Brazil's history and photogenic landscapes, ideal to combine with the circuit of neighboring forts on the same side of the bay.

By car, follow the seafront via São Francisco and Charitas to Jurujuba and access Estrada Eurico Gaspar Dutra. A taxi or app can drop you off at the gate.
