Get to know Koroška

Koroška is the Slovenian part of the historic Carinthia, in the north of the country, near the border with Austria. It is a region of narrow valleys and forests, cut by the Drava, Meža and Mislinja rivers, with the Peca and Uršlja gora mountains to the south and the Pohorje massif to the east. The main towns are Slovenj Gradec, Ravne na Koroškem and Dravograd.

For centuries, the Meža Valley lived off lead and zinc mines and forges. In Mežica, the old mine has become the Podzemlje Pece, where you can tour the galleries on a small train and, on guided routes, go by bicycle or kayak on underground lakes and tunnels. Ravne na Koroškem has a tradition of steelmaking and was the home of the writer Prežihov Voranc; his birthplace in Kotlje is now a museum.

Peca, at over 2,000 meters, is the mountain of the King Matjaž legend, who is said to sleep beneath it with his army. On the summit of Uršlja gora there is a pilgrimage church and a mountain hut, from which you can see the Alps. The region’s trails are less crowded than those of the Julian Alps, and farm stays are a common form of accommodation.

Slovenj Gradec is a small town with a historic center, an art gallery and the title of Messenger City of Peace, awarded by the United Nations. The composer Hugo Wolf was born there. Dravograd, at the confluence of the Meža and the Drava, preserves the Romanesque church of Saint Vitus, one of the oldest in the country.

When to go

The trails on Peca and Uršlja gora and the valley bike rides are done mainly from June to September. The Podzemlje Pece welcomes visitors year-round, with different hours in summer and winter: check before you go. In autumn the valley forests turn colorful. In the mountains, winter brings snow and cold.

Getting there

There is no airport in the region. Slovenj Gradec is about an hour and a half by road from the capital, via the A1 to Celje and then regional roads through Velenje. From Maribor the road follows the Drava Valley to Dravograd. Regional buses connect the towns of the region with Maribor, Velenje and Ljubljana, but a car makes visiting the valleys and mountains easier.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Koroška

What is the Podzemlje Pece?

It is the former lead and zinc mine of Mežica, opened to visitors. There is a route on a small train through the galleries and, with a guide, bicycle and kayak trips in tunnels and underground lakes. The temperature inside is low year-round: bring a warm layer.

Who is King Matjaž?

He is a king from Slovenian legend who, according to tradition, sleeps with his army under Mount Peca, waiting to return and help his people. The figure is linked to the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, from the 15th century. On Peca there is a cave and a sculpture that recall the legend.

Do you need a car to visit Koroška?

It helps a lot. Regional buses connect the towns, but they are less frequent in the valleys and do not reach the trails and farm stays. By car, the region is about an hour from Maribor and a little farther from the capital.

Which trail to do in Koroška?

The ascent of Uršlja gora, with its church and hut at the top, is the most popular, with trails starting from several villages. Peca has longer trails, along the border with Austria. Both require hiking footwear and checking the weather before you set out.
