About Rua Coberta
The Rua Coberta (Covered Street) is a stretch of Rua Madre Verônica, in the center of Gramado, between Avenida Borges de Medeiros and Rua Garibaldi. The stretch is closed to cars and sheltered from the weather by a translucent roof. It opened in December 1996, designed as a meeting point for locals and visitors and as an events space for the town. In February 1997 it hosted the first Gramado Fantasia carnival ball.
It's about 100 meters of pedestrian street. Cafés and restaurants set their tables in the middle of the street, and there are shops, benches and flower boxes. In rain or cold, the street stays busy: that's what it's for. At night, with the lights on and live music, it's the liveliest spot in the center and the town's main address for cafés and restaurants. The street is public, with no admission, and is open every day.
The Rua Coberta hosts much of Gramado's events calendar. During the Film Festival, it gets the red carpet. During Natal Luz, it has choir performances and special decorations. It also hosts the Gastronomy Festival, Easter events, book fairs, exhibitions and concerts.
It's a good starting point for exploring the center on foot, and a sure shelter when the mountain weather turns, which happens often in winter. The Igreja Matriz São Pedro is right next to the street, and the Palácio dos Festivais is a few steps away, on Avenida Borges de Medeiros.
