About Mini Mundo
Mini Mundo was born in a hotel courtyard. The Höppner family, owners of the hotel since 1958, started in 1979 with a little dollhouse for their granddaughter. The idea came from a miniature town Otto Höppner visited in Germany with his grandson. Then came a toy railroad, the first wooden buildings and the first castle replicas. The park opened to the public on December 15, 1983, and was Gramado's first theme park.
There are more than 200 buildings at 1:24 scale, meaning 24 times smaller than the originals. They sit in an open-air garden, with ponds, waterfalls and fountains among the models. There are German castles, such as Neuschwanstein with its hundreds of windows, a German train station, an airport, Porto Alegre's Usina do Gasômetro, the Museu do Ipiranga and a church from Ouro Preto. Miniature trains run between the buildings.
The details keep you hooked. Thousands of tiny figures and animals populate streets, squares, stations and gardens. Every so often the park takes a census of the little figures, and the population has already passed 3,000. The pieces are made in the park's own workshop, and some take up to two years to finish. At first, the buildings were made of wood; today they use materials chosen to withstand sun, rain and frost, because they stay outdoors all year. The paths are narrow and run between well-kept flower beds, right next to the models.
There's a café, shops and a kids' play area. The park stays open in the rain, because it's entirely outdoors.
