About Monumento Nacional ao Imigrante
The Monumento Nacional ao Imigrante stands at the entrance to Caxias do Sul, along BR-116, and honors the immigrants who settled Serra Gaúcha. It's one of the city's official symbols and is listed as a heritage site by Iphan (the national heritage institute).
The cornerstone was laid in 1950, and the monument was inaugurated on February 28, 1954, by President Getúlio Vargas. The bronze sculptures are by Rio Grande do Sul artist Antônio Caringi and show a farming couple with a child. Behind them, an obelisk bears reliefs about land ownership and the immigrants' work.
Beneath the sculptures is a marble-lined crypt. Since 2004 it has served as a cultural space, with exhibits on immigration, and houses the Museu do Imigrante.
The visit is quick: you can walk around the monument, see the reliefs up close and go down to the crypt when it's open. It's a good stop when arriving in or leaving the city on BR-116 and pairs well with other immigration-themed outings, such as the Réplica de Caxias do Sul de 1885, at the Parque da Festa da Uva.
