Ruínas da Ponte Seca
Nine large stone pillars still stand from the railroad viaduct opened in 1888 on the Leopoldina branch line that linked the region to Nova Friburgo. The lone columns on top of a small hill are one of the most photographed scenes in the municipality.

About Ruínas da Ponte Seca
The Ruínas da Ponte Seca are what remains of an old railroad viaduct in Sumidouro, in the Rio de Janeiro mountain region. The stone pillars are left standing in a row on top of a small grass-covered hill.
The bridge opened in 1888 and was part of the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina branch line that linked Nova Friburgo to Além Paraíba, passing through Sumidouro. The line was shut down in the 1960s, and the tracks are gone; the pillars remained.
From a distance, the pillars appear lined up against the green hills of the countryside. Up close, you can walk among them and see how they were built from fitted stone blocks. It is one of the most photographed scenes in the municipality.
The final approach is a short climb up the hill, with no marked trail. There are no facilities on site.

Practical information
How much time to set aside

How to get there
It is in the countryside of Sumidouro, on top of a small hill. You drive there and, at the end, walk up through the pasture. Since there are few signs, use a maps app or arrange the outing with a local guide; some tours combine the Ponte Seca with the Cascata Conde d'Eu.
Tip
Wear shoes with firm soles for the climb and do not climb the pillars.
