About Teleférico do Morro da Cruz

The Nova Friburgo cable car is one of the most traditional outings in the Rio de Janeiro mountain region. The double chairs leave from Praça do Suspiro, in downtown, and climb the slope above the forest to the Morro da Cruz.

The cable car opened in 1975. The ride has two stages. The first stop has a leisure center with a viewpoint, a bowling alley, a snack bar and the Boneca Eva, a large figure that visitors walk through to learn about the human body. The second stage continues to the top of the Morro da Cruz.

From up there, the view opens over the city nestled in the valley and the surrounding mountains. It is the best place to understand how Nova Friburgo spreads out among the hills.

The ride takes no physical effort, but the chairs are open and pass high above the forest, which may bother people afraid of heights. Down below, Praça do Suspiro has the Capela de Santo Antônio and craft fairs on some weekends.

Practical information

How much time to set aside

One to two hours is enough to ride up both stages, enjoy the viewpoint and come back at a relaxed pace.

Best time

On clear days, more common in fall and winter; in the morning the mountains are usually less cloudy and the light favors the view of the city.

How to get there

Boarding is at Praça do Suspiro, in downtown Nova Friburgo, a short walk from the main downtown streets. If you go by car, park on the nearby streets.

Tip

Bring a jacket even on a sunny day: the wind is colder at the top, and the ride in the open chairs is in the open air.
