About Pico da Caledônia
The Pico da Caledônia is one of the highest mountains in the Serra do Mar and one of Nova Friburgo's best-known sights. It rises above 2,200 meters and stands out on the city's horizon, with a cluster of antenna towers on top.
The climb starts in the Cascatinha neighborhood and follows a narrow, paved, very steep road, lined with small farms and then forest. The final stretch is a long staircase with a handrail that climbs the rocky slope to the summit. Vehicle access is restricted on part of the route, and there is an entrance where visitors register.
At the top, the view opens over Nova Friburgo, the Três Picos, the Serra dos Órgãos and, on very clear days, even Guanabara Bay. On cloudy days, the peak often sits above a sea of clouds. The top has two summits, linked by a metal walkway; part of the area is restricted because of the antennas.
The hike requires no technical skill, but it is tiring: the slope is long and the staircase has hundreds of steps. It is recommended for people with some fitness and is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
