About Morro do Paxixi
Morro do Paxixi is one of the best-known viewpoints in Aquidauana. It is in the district of Camisão, in the Serra de Maracaju, where the hills begin to descend toward the Pantanal plain.
From the top, the view opens over the cerrado (Brazilian savanna), the cliffs and hills of the range, the Aquidauana River valley and much of the Pantanal plain. The summit has rocky areas where you can sit and take in the landscape, and the wind is usually strong.
The spot is most popular in the late afternoon, for the sunset, and has become a photo spot, including for photo shoots. If you want to go beyond the main viewpoint, you can take longer hikes in the hills with local guides.
A narrow, steep dirt road climbs almost to the top. The last stretch is on foot, a short walk over rock and uneven ground. It does not require athletic fitness, but it calls for sturdy shoes and care near the edge of the rocks. It is not a suitable outing for people with mobility difficulties.

Practical information
How much time to set aside
Allow one to two hours at the viewpoint, not counting the drive; guided hikes in the hills take longer.
Best time
In the dry season, between fall and winter, when the dirt road is in better shape and the sky is usually clear; late afternoon is the most popular time, for the sunset over the Pantanal. At the end of the dry season, smoke from wildfires can obscure the view.
How to get there
It is in the district of Camisão, in Aquidauana (MS). From downtown, follow the MS-450 highway (Estrada Parque de Piraputanga) to Camisão, where a signposted dirt road climbs the hill. A regular car can make it in dry weather; when the road is wet, a high-clearance or 4x4 vehicle helps. From the parking area, you continue on foot to the viewpoint.
Tip
Bring water and a flashlight if you are staying for sunset, and take all your trash back with you. Avoid driving up right after heavy rain, and arrange longer hikes with a local guide.
