About Igreja Nossa Senhora Imaculada Conceição
The Igreja Nossa Senhora Imaculada Conceição is the main church of Aquidauana and the postcard view of downtown. Its two pointed towers can be seen from many spots downtown, including from the Ponte Velha (old bridge) over the Aquidauana River.
The parish was created on April 4, 1912. In 1930 the church was entrusted to Redemptorist priests from the United States, and the current building went up during the 1930s, in Gothic style, designed by engineer Alexandre Albuquerque, who also worked on the Catedral da Sé in São Paulo. The Redemptorists still run the parish.
Inside, the church has a Latin-cross floor plan, pointed arches and stained glass in the side windows and at the altar. The nave is long and quiet, good for a pause during a walk around downtown.
In front is the main church square, with a garden and open space that lets you see the whole facade. It is a short, easy visit on flat ground that combines well with a walk to the Ponte Velha and the riverbank.
