About Gruta de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes

The Gruta de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes (grotto) is a small natural rock shelter in the district of Santa Maria de Marechal, in Marechal Floriano, in the mountain region of Espírito Santo. The space is low and shallow: about 1.70 meters high and 2 meters deep.

The site holds part of the history of the district's settlement. The grotto was home to the first settler of Santa Maria and a shelter for the settlers who came after. A plaque on site reads: "Here rested the heroic founders of Santa Maria."

Today the grotto is a place of devotion. Inside is the image of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, protected by a wooden shelter, and, beside it, that of Santa Bernadete. The faithful visit throughout the year to pray.
