About Distrito de Araguaia
Araguaia is a district of Marechal Floriano, in the Espírito Santo mountains, that keeps the memory of Italian immigration in the state. Settlement began in 1883, when the first families arrived from Alfredo Chaves along paths cut through the forest, following the Benevente and Iriritimirim rivers.
The village landmark is the old Araguaya railroad station, opened in 1903 on the Estrada de Ferro Sul do Espírito Santo. Coffee grown in Santa Maria de Marechal, Victor Hugo and Rio Fundo passed through here on its way to Vitória. The building, beside the tracks and surrounded by lawn, now serves as a tourist support point.
Near the station are other places linked to the immigrants. The Museu Casa Rosa recreates an old Italian family home, with furniture, objects and photographs from the period. The Centro Cultural Ezequiel Ronchi holds records of the immigration, and the Capela de Santo Antônio dates from 1891.
The outing is relaxed, on flat ground, and goes well with the area's restaurants and shops. It is worth it if you enjoy history, simple countryside architecture and mountain scenery.
