About Museu Histórico Municipal

The Museu Histórico Municipal of São Miguel do Iguaçu preserves the memory of the town's settlement, in western Paraná, near the border with Paraguay and Lago de Itaipu. It is a small museum run by the town hall, located downtown in a space next to the bus station.

The collection has about 200 objects and more than a thousand photographs. They include objects used by the pioneer families, old printed photos and historical documents that tell how the town was formed and how it absorbed influences from other peoples of the border region.

Besides the objects, the museum digitizes its collection, shows films and digitized photos, and records pioneers' testimonies at gatherings called Roda de Conversa (conversation circle). It also runs activities with students and with Guarani Indigenous and quilombola (descendants of runaway-slave communities) communities, and hosts temporary exhibitions.

The visit is short and easy, good if you are passing through town or want to understand the history of western Paraná before heading to the artificial beaches of Lago de Itaipu.
