About Parque das Aves

The Parque das Aves was opened in 1994 by a couple, Dennis and Anna-Sophie Croukamp, in a forested area next to the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu. Today it covers about 16 hectares of Atlantic Forest with more than 1,400 birds of about 130 species. More than half came to the park rescued from trafficking or abuse. It is a private institution dedicated to the conservation of Atlantic Forest species, with breeding and release programs.

The route is a forest trail that passes through large aviaries you can walk into. In the macaw aviary, dozens of macaws fly over your head. There are aviaries for toucans, for river and mangrove birds, for small forest birds, and one for butterflies and hummingbirds. One of them is dedicated to the small, brown-feathered forest birds that go unnoticed in the wild. The park presents the Viveiro Cecropia as the largest bird aviary in Brazil. In each aviary, the birds fly free in a setting that resembles their native habitat: river, mangrove or forest.

Along the way, signs explain the story of each species and why it is there, often linked to rescue from trafficking.

What sets it apart from an ordinary zoo is the closeness: in the walk-in aviaries there is no fence between you and the birds. The park stays open in the rain, and the trail is almost entirely covered by the forest canopy. In 30 years, more than 10 million visitors have been there.
