About Cataratas do Iguaçu (lado brasileiro)
Iguazu Falls is a set of about 275 waterfalls, a number that varies with the river's flow, spread over some 2.7 km on the border between Brazil and Argentina. Most of the falls are on the Argentine side; the Brazilian side has the head-on view of the whole set. The Parque Nacional do Iguaçu was created in 1939 and has been a Unesco World Natural Heritage Site since 1986. It covers about 170,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest, managed since December 2022 by a concession company together with ICMBio (Brazil's federal conservation agency). In 2025 the park received more than two million visitors.
The visit starts at the Visitor Center, where a panoramic bus, included in the ticket, takes you to the start of the Trilha das Cataratas (Falls Trail). It runs just over a kilometer along the edge of the canyon, with viewpoints that get closer and closer to the falls.
The highlight is the walkway that goes out into the river in front of the Garganta do Diabo, the tallest fall, more than 80 meters high and U-shaped. There the water throws up a cloud of spray that soaks everyone who passes. At the end of the trail, at Porto Canoas, a panoramic elevator goes up to the upper viewpoint, where there is a restaurant and step-free access.
The park also has boat rides that get close to the falls, such as the Macuco Safari, forest trails and a bike path, all charged separately. On the trail, coatis wander close to people: they are wild animals and should not be fed.
On the Argentine side, in Parque Nacional Iguazú, the experience is different: the walkways run over and into the falls. The two visits complement each other, and each takes a day.
Before you go
Practical information
How much time to set aside
Half a day for the trail and viewpoints; a full day with a boat ride.
Best time
The water flow changes the scene: when the river is high, the falls merge into a wall of water; when it is low, the separate falls and the rocks show. During major floods, the Garganta do Diabo walkway closes for safety; the viewpoints along the trail stay open. The park is open every day.
How to get there
The Visitor Center is at km 18 of Rodovia das Cataratas (BR-469). By city bus, take line 120, which leaves from the Terminal de Transporte Urbano (TTU) downtown and passes the airport. There is an official parking lot, which can be reserved.
Tip
Buy your ticket on the official website and bring a rain poncho or a change of clothes for the walkway. Before you go, check the park's official social media profile to see if the walkway is open.
