About Largo das Forras
Largo das Forras is the main square of Tiradentes and the meeting point for visitors to the town. It is a grassy, tree-lined square surrounded by colonial mansions in the heart of the historic center.
The name recalls colonial times: according to tradition, this is where enslaved people received their letters of manumission, and freed women were called forras. The square also has a monument to Tiradentes, the independence conspirator the town is named after.
Today the square is the center of the town's activity. Horse-drawn carriage rides leave from here, and around it are many of the mansions that house restaurants, shops and pousadas (guesthouses). Throughout the year, the square hosts fairs and cultural events.
It is a good place to sit in the shade and start your walk along the stone streets that climb to the Matriz de Santo Antônio.
